How to get Phantom Wood

Bring an End Times Axe and an ostrich eye, and be out in 25 minutes.

The only Phantom Wood tree grows in the Lone Cave, under the bridge. An eye in the bridge booth sends the bridge down to it, the End Times Axe is the only axe that cuts it, and after about 25 minutes the cave starts to kill you. It is worth it: a plank sells for $420 a unit, against $106 for the next most valuable wood.

An End Times Axe
Phantom Wood has a hardness of 80,000,000. The End Times Axe hits it for 10,000,000 a swing; every other axe does nothing.
A Preserved Enlarged Ostrich Eye
It was sold once, hidden on the light fixture in Bob’s Shack during a Halloween event, for $400,306. It is used up each trip, so today it comes from trading with other players.
Money for the toll
$100 each time you pay the bridge man: once to lower the bridge and again for each extension.
A vehicle, and nothing you mind losing
A truck carries far more wood than your arms. Leave trailers behind, and leave every axe at home except the End Times Axe. A Worklight helps once the glowing branches are gone.
A private server, if you can
Only one tree grows per server. After it is cut, 7,200 minutes (five days) pass before a new one starts, and it then reaches full size in about 10 minutes. Other players can also keep the bridge down on you.

The run, minute by minute

  1. Set the eye. Balance it in the small round hole in either bridge booth window. Logs stacked in the booth help, but a friend holding it is easiest. Pay the toll and the eye is gone.
  2. Buy time at once. Each toll keeps the bridge down about three minutes. Pay for extensions straight away: a full run takes six or seven tolls in all.
  3. Get your vehicle on the bridge before it sinks. Once the bridge dips under the river, driving on is unlikely. Drive on, hop back to the booth to extend, then jump back onto the bridge.
  4. Ride it down. It takes about two minutes to reach the cave floor. Keep still: moving vehicles glitch on a moving bridge.
  5. Keep right. The walkway splits. The right path leads to the tree; the left ends in a hole that drops you, and anything you carry, out at the Safari Hole.
  6. Take the branches first. Chop the branches that hang over land. Cutting the base first can send the whole tree into the black sand abyss, and anything that falls there is gone.
  7. Cut big pieces down. Load small pieces: big ones can clip through the bridge or your truck on the way up and be lost.
  8. Leave before the time is up. Past about 25 minutes the cave takes 15 health every half second. The Safari Hole path is a second way out.

Selling it

At the Wood Dropoff a Phantom Wood log is worth $150 a unit and a plank $420, so mill it first. How it compares with every other wood is on the wood table. Whether a run pays depends on what you paid for the eye.
