The best axe you can buy today is the Silver Axe.
Of the 5 axes still on sale at Wood R Us, the Silver Axe ($2,040) cuts fastest at 3.33 damage per second. The Rukiryaxe beats it at 4.2 and is still earned in the Den. The Many Axe and the Glorbaxe are faster again: the first can no longer be obtained, and the second’s quest stopped working for new runs when The Hunt ended.

These are slow on ordinary trees and far faster on one or two kinds. Most came out of a Christmas gift and are no longer sold, so they change hands between players.
- End Times Axe: the only axe that cuts Phantom Wood at all, 3.95 on anything else.
- Cave Axe: 32.72 damage per second on Cavecrawler Wood, 1 on anything else.
- Gingerbread Axe: 27.5 damage per second on Koa Wood and 21.25 damage per second on Walnut Wood, 2.4 on anything else.
- Frost Axe: 19.35 damage per second on Frost Wood, 0.9 on anything else.
- Fire Axe: 18.14 damage per second on Lava Wood, 1.1 on anything else.
- Bluesteel Axe: 17.8 damage per second on Blue Spruce, 3.5 on anything else.
- Overgrown Axe: 15.29 damage per second on Gold Wood and 15.22 damage per second on Zombie Wood, 1.45 on anything else.
- Bird Axe: 9.75 damage per second on Cavecrawler Wood and 6.25 damage per second on Lava Wood, 4.13 on anything else.
- Pie Axe: 7.6 damage per second on Cherry Wood, 3.17 on anything else.

- Hardened Axe, $550: 2.1 damage per second, 8 units of reach.
- Steel Axe, $190: 1.33 damage per second, 8 units of reach.
- Plain Axe, $90: 0.75 damage per second, 6 units of reach.
- Basic Hatchet, $12: 0.3 damage per second, 4.8 units of reach.
Many players skip the Plain and Steel axes and save for the Hardened Axe, which cuts about 1.6 times as fast as the Steel Axe.
